On role models

So often people talk about what terrible role models Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are, and what great role models Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift are. To which I have to say…really?

Taylor Swift writes most of her songs about men she’s dated. She is cunning and saavy, especially when it comes to manipulating the media, but she hides that in order to maintain her sweet, “all-American” image. Selena Gomez is most famous for her relationship with Justin Beiber.

Rihanna has long maintained that she does not want to be a role model. She is young and living her life, and she owns her mistakes. She is unapologetic about her success. Nicki Minaj, whether on Twitter or in interviews, constantly reminds girls to succeed in school. She has made it clear that she is first and foremost a businesswoman looking after her family. After being betrayed and raped by ex-boyfriends, she has remained single for the past ten years. She started writing rhymes and rapping as a means to cope with her life, and she was eventually discovered when she posted her music on MySpace. Her life story is one of resilience and perseverance despite the odds.

The problem isn’t that Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are role models. The problem is that we don’t allow women to be complex. We don’t allow different women with different life stories to be considered role models because we fear that complexity. God forbid they define their lives in terms other than men.

Selena Gomez isn’t a role model?? um, ok, yeah, it may be foolish of her to be on-and-off-dating that douchebag. but she also has been an ambassador of Unicef since 2009, been doing charity work in between her hiatuses. she got denied a visa to perform and enter Russia because she is pro LGBTQ . and many more good deeds that has nothing to do with her overly publicised relationship. and for Taylor, while i do not support her serial fake dating antics and PR stunts for song material.. but not all her songs about “exes” or boys, her song “Mean” is about standing up to bullying. she also does charities.. and she also wrote a song, Ronan, about a boy who died from cancer where all the proceeds went to help those who fight cancer.

another problem is you try to make a point but you try to support your argument by putting other people under the bus and bringing up their flaws. talking about not allowing different women with different life stories to be considered role models..

Also please don’t paint Taylor as a ‘serial dater’ because she has risen through a male dominated industry by learning to play guitar and writing all her own songs. She dated 6 guys yes just 6.Also why are we not praising women for writing about their lives? Taylor is a confessional songwriter like all the greats e.g Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder… she is standing up to the patriarchy and in her songs where she does talk about break ups and calls men out on their crappy behaviour. That’s why she’s my role model because she carries on song writing and writing about her life even when people call it for publicity… she’s been writing about her life since she was 12, she wrote songs about her being bullied etc and through that she helped me when I was bullied. Also Taylor frequently visits childrens hospitals but very rarely does anyone find out due to the fact she doesn’t want to publicise it… So don’t say she does ‘PR stunts’. And there’s nothing wrong with doing things like that for PR even if she did.

All of these women are great role models, whether you like them or not they mean a lot to people and get your facts correct before you want to shame them.
